Mr ANOULACK CHANTHIVONG (Macquarie Fields—Minister for Better Regulation and Fair Trading, Minister for Industry and Trade, Minister for Innovation, Science and Technology, Minister for Building, and Minister for Corrections)—The Macquarie Fields electorate is home to many cultural communities who add to the rich mosaic that is modern Australia. The local Filipino community makes an invaluable contribution to our community. I was pleased to join the Federal member for Macarthur, Dr Mike Freelander, the State members for Campbelltown and Leppington, Greg Warren and Nathan Hagarty, and Councillor Rey Manoto at the Campbelltown and Region Filipino Community Council (CRFCC) celebration of 125 years of Filipino independence. Australia and the Philippines share the values of freedom and democracy, and the CRFCC's annual event is a reminder of the valued and longstanding friendship that exists between our two nations. A flag raising ceremony also commemorated the 162nd birthday of Dr Jose P. Rizal, who inspired the Filipino independence movement and is a national hero of the Philippines. His legacy and martyrdom are an inspiration for everyone who believes in democracy and equality before the law. I commend the efforts of the CRFCC and honour our Filipino community for enriching the local community. To them I say salamat.
