MP slams Government as commuter carparking crisis deepens

16 February 2018

Member for Macquarie Fields, Anoulack Chanthivong MP, has slammed the Government over its failure to address the worsening carparking crisis at Edmondson Park Station.

“Commuters are at their wit’s end. It’s chaos!” Mr Chanthivong said.

“The carpark is full to capacity around 7am. Commuters have taken to parking on the footpath or parking in restricted areas and risking fines. A conga-line of cars is parked as far as the eye can see.”

Mr Chanthivong said the problem was only deepening as thousands of people continue to move into the suburb – a major growth corridor that straddles Campbelltown, Liverpool and Camden.

“The situation is so dire that my office has been inundated with complaints and I expect that will only worsen as thousands of new homes are built. We have a commuter carparking crisis on our doorstep and the Berejiklian Liberal Government continues to ignore commuters’ needs.

“The reality is that the Liberal Government puts development before people – collecting millions of dollars in stamp duty and yet not delivering the necessary infrastructure. It’s a disgrace!”

Mr Chanthivong also fears that the situation is only set to worsen following the release of the Liberal Government’s Precinct Plans – which will see thousands of people pour into high-rise flats around train stations from Macarthur through to Glenfield.

“The Government needs to wake up and act now to fix this problem. I just want a fair go for commuters and my community,” Mr Chanthivong said.
